Whey isn't magic. Here's when you actually need it
Protein powder is a convenience, not a requirement. Work out your gap first.

Most people who train do well on roughly 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight each day. Count what you already eat before you buy anything.
If food gets you there, you do not need whey. If you are 30–50 g short most days, one scoop is the easiest way to close the gap.
Concentrate is fine for most people. Isolate is worth the extra cost if you are lactose-sensitive or cutting hard on calories.
Timing matters far less than the daily total. Have it whenever it fits your day.
